How to apply for postdoc grant from the Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion

Fill in and submit the application with attachments electronically through our online service.

Before completing the application, the online service will ask you to indicate whether you have completed your doctoral degree outside of Finland. Additionally, you must specify if a professor working at a Finnish university has invited you to join their research group. These are prerequisites for applying for the grant.

Please provide the following attachments with your application:

1. A research plan, maximum 4 pages long (font size at least 12, line spacing at least 1) including a list of publications.

Address the following issues in the plan:

  • Overview of the research topic and an outline of the general problematics of the topic
  • Definition of the research problem: What question does your research aim to answer?
  • Literature review: What is known about the research topic? What existing research and information are you relying on? What new information will you produce to augment existing knowledge?
  • Presentation of the chosen research methodology, conceptual starting points, research structure
  • Empirical material: presentation of the research material, research approach, research methods and reporting method of the research material’s results
  • Evaluation of the significance of the research from the point of view of business and innovation

2. Curriculum vitae and list of publications

These should show the nature and current status of your research and academic work. It is recommended that you use the template drafted by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity as a template for your CV.

3. A plan of expenses and a funding plan

Attach a plan of expenses and a funding plan that show how you will fund the research in its entirety.

4. A recommendation of the applicant and research plan

Attach a recommendation of the applicant and research plan. Ask for a recommendation from your supervising professor.

The applicant is not to attach the recommendation to their application; instead the recommender him/herself is to make the recommendation. The system will automatically send the request to the recommender. Recommendations sent by email will not be accepted.

5. Commitment from the hosting institution

Attach a description of the host institution's or laboratory’s consent to the visit and participation in expenses.

Other grants for postdoc researchers

The foundation also supports the work of postdoc researchers abroad through Säätiöiden post doc -pooli. Grant application instructions and dates can be found on the pool website.

We also support postdoc research through the PoDoCo program (Post Docs in Companies). The program aims to facilitate the transition of young doctors into the business sector while simultaneously enhancing the long-term innovation capacity of Finland's broader business community. The application periods and instructions can be found on the program’s website.

For companies, the PoDoCo program offers the opportunity to initiate and implement new strategic initiatives while leveraging the expertise and knowledge of young PhDs.

The total duration of a PoDoCo project is 1–2 years, divided into two 6–12 month parts each.

  • The first phase is a foundation-funded research phase.
  • The second phase, of the same length, is an applied work phase funded by the company. This company-funded phase is a regular employment relationship between the PhD and the company.
