Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion awards over €800,000 in research funding in 2026 – focus on breakthrough technologies

The Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion aims to support research and researchers whose work has the potential to lead to breakthrough technologies. Breakthrough technologies bring about significant changes and improvements to existing technical solutions and provide sustainable responses to the major challenges of our time.

This year, the foundation received a record number of applications—over 1,000. This spring, the foundation awarded a total of more than €800,000 in funding for research in the field of technology. Of this amount, 23 full-year and part-year grants were awarded, totaling €525,000, as well as 40 encouragement grants totaling €200,000. Additionally, the foundation awarded grants to undergraduate students. The names of the grant recipients will be published on the foundation’s website at the end of May.

The primary criterion in the allocation of grants is the scientific quality and ambition of the research. Other criteria include the innovativeness of the research, as well as its contribution to business competitiveness and sustainable development. In addition, attention is paid to how applicants justify the usefulness of the grant for their specific stage of research.

The main emphasis of the grants is on full-year funding for doctoral studies. Grants are distributed across fields of technology according to application pressure. A new field of science this year was quantum technology.

The foundation also awarded prizes of €10,000 to the Good Teacher and Young Researcher of the year. The recipients will be announced in the last week of May.
